Treating symptoms of AD(H)D with brain stimulation

ADHD treatment with our brain stimulator, at home, without medication. Magnetic brain stimulation does not cure AD(H)D, provided you would want that, but it can reduce cumbersome symptoms.

Properties of AD(H)D

AD(H)D is defined by an abnormal EEG, attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Symptoms occur in varying degrees in different people with the diagnosis. Brain waves too, can be very variable between two people with AD(H)D.

Een qEEG onderscheidt vier types ADHD.
Four different subtypes of AD(H)D can be distinguished with qEEG. These types call for different individualised treatment strategies. Adapted from a Korean scientific publication.

Cause of ADHD

The cause of ADD and ADHD is unknown. Paracetamol/acetaminophen during pregnancy increases the chance of ADHD in the child.

Treatment of AD(H)D

In AD(H)D the brain waves are abnormal. Many symptoms of AD(H)D are treatable with magnetic brain stimulation (TMS) because this normalises brain waves. This can also be performed in children. We give some examples and testimonies.

Three qEEGs of a woman with ADHD. The third qEEG is the ‘most normal’: has the least dark blue, orange and red. In that case she has not taken medication, but she has had 26 microTMS treatments and has discontinued treatment by her psychiatrist.

A woman (RB), early 40s, ADHD, aftermath of burnout

She had been using methylphenidate (active substance in Ritalin and Concerta) for twelve years, on and off. To give an example of the effect of the medication: Without methylphenidate, she could hardly read a newspaper article due to ‘jumpiness’ and lack of concentration, but with methylphenidate she can. In a period of 94 days, she has stimulated her brain at home 26 times with the Epione stimulator from Magnolia Therapeutics. She now notices that even without the methylphenidate she can now easily read newspaper articles. During the first covid lockdown she needed methylphenidate to get through it properly. During the second lockdown with the brain stimulation, that was not necessary. She says that now she has discovered the brain stimulator, she may never need methylphenidate again! She writes: “Now that I’m doing brain stimulation for about two weeks, let me tell you how it’s going. It is amazing what an effect I notice. […] So on January 1 was the first brain stimulation. Immediately after that, I slept better. In addition, I noticed that I managed to relax consciously and also that I was worrying / daydreaming less. Now that I have had brain stimulation five times, I notice that I can relax better and better. I also feel cheerful and ‘cleaned up’. By that I mean that I manage to arrange all kinds of things that just have to happen, but that often don’t get done. That is now more effortless.”

A man (RdB) in his 40s, depression, anxiety, a lot of worrying

His EEG resembled that of someone with official diagnosis ADD and we told him that. He had never heard of this diagnosis before (and we don’t diagnose it). He then went on to read about ADD, and recognized 95% of the symptoms. That in itself was a relief, to finally know what was wrong with him. We then started stimulating his brain at home with microTMS. After one session, he wrote: “I slept wonderfully. It was quieter in my head. I feel more cheerful today. I can handle irritations and criticisms better. The first day is hopeful!” After five treatments, he writes: “The good news goes on: I fall asleep without the help of wine.” Eventually he stopped smoking, because he didn’t like smoking without wine. We said goodbye to him over a year ago. A year and a half later, he wrote about it in an email: “Dear Dr. Ruud Kortekaas, First of all, thank you very much for the microTMS technique that you have developed / brought to the Netherlands. I used the device with microTMS waves a year and a half ago for 4 weeks and this has completely changed my life. From the brain scan I had made in your practice came ‘the diagnosis’ ADD. In the past year and a half (after using the microTMS device) it has become ‘quiet’ in my head. I’m much less tired because of that. Much less scared. I am more decisive and stable in my emotions. This has brought a lot of peace in my family / relationship. I could write a book about all the positive changes I’ve been through. My thanks are great!”

A woman (MvD) ca. 50, ADD and depression

Medication helps a little, but with higher dosage she loses all her ‘feeling’ and she doesn’t want that (anymore). The EEG clearly matches the low alpha AD(H)D subtype. We start brain stimulation at home with an Epione stimulator. Right after starting, she writes “I don’t know if it’s ‘real’ or still the idea… but I think something does happen (slightly less tension in my jaws and think a little more ‘rest’ in my head”. Later: “It’s going well. I’m not there yet, but I do notice a difference.” After thirty treatments, she feels much better. Her husband is also impressed.

A man, early 50s, AD(H)D, gloomy, everything takes effort, no pleasure

His EEG was clearly abnormal. He writes after a series of home treatments: “Hello Ruud, It’s going well! Everything is a little easier. There also seems to be more peace in my head which provides more overview. As if the chaotic fog that I have struggled with all my life is slowly pulling up (ADD / ADHD phenomena). Lifting this fog also helps to see possibilities. So I am again very grateful for this treatment, thank you!”
